Below is a selection of documentaries that I encourage you to watch. Obviously, you don’t need to watch all of them, but I’m quite sure there will be something in this collection that will be of immense benefit.

Slay

An outstanding documentary showing you the realities of the fur and leather industry used for fashion. From the makers of award-winning films, Cowspiracy and What The Health, Slay follows film maker, Rebecca Cappelli’s journey around the world to uncover the dark side of the fashion industry. Free to view from Waterbear.

Milked

Although filmed in N.Z., this documentary shows that even ‘green’ countries have a dark under-belly that is hidden. A young activist goes deep into dairyland where he takes on the giants of New Zealand’s most powerful industry. His journey exposes not only the sustainability crisis and the dangerous denial of impending agricultural distruption but also what New Zealand and other countries need to do to change their fate. Forks Over Knives

This 2011 documentary makes the argument for a whole food, plant-based diet as a way to combat and even reverse chronic diseases. It is as relevant today as it was when it was made. you can stream it online or Netflix.

From the makers of Forks Over Knives, this documentary tells the story of three people on a quest to spread the message of one of the most important health breakthroughs of all time. This is free to watch on YouTube.

Cowspiracy

It’s not just animal welfare and health that fuels people’s desire to go vegan, another huge reason people convert is the effects that animal farming has on the planet. This is a movie that enviornmental organisations, surprisingly don’t want you to see. Download direct from their website or on Netflix.

Earthlings

A documentary about humankind’s total dependence on animals for everything from food, clothing, medicine and entertainment. Joaquin Phoenix narrates this movie presenting it in five segments – pets, food, clothing, entertainment and scientific experiments. Awesome music by Moby. This movie opened the world up to the abusive animal industry. Watch from the website.

Dominion

An Australian documentary exposes the dark hidden world of modern agriculture which most Australian have no idea about. Using drones and hidden cameras the film makers were able to get a true picture on the price of meat and dairy in a country that believes it has excellent animal welfare. It definitely has a global message. Free to watch from the website. Graphic images warning.

The Game Changers

The long awaited documentary produced by Jackie Chan, Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron was released in 2019.  A UFC fighter embarks on a quest to find the optimal diet for health and performance after suffering an injury. Although this movie is focused on athletes, it is also another reminder of the benefits of eating a plant-based diet Out on different platforms including Netflix, iTunes and Vimeo.

Watson:   A must-see! Blending revealing contemporary interviews with Watson, archival clips of Sea Shepherd’s dramatic encounters, and spectacular underwater nature footage, Lesley Chilcott paints a portrait of a man willing to put his own life and liberty at risk in a relentless quest to protect the oceans and the marine life within.

The Big Fat Lie: A New Zealand documentary that follows the journey of Grant Dixon after he had a heart attack. What he learned about the medical system and the lack of information it currently holds regarding whole food plant-based nutrition as a valid treatment for heart disease.

where to watch they're trying to kill us

They’re Trying to Kill Us: The film features notable influencers from the fields of Hip Hop, medicine, sports, entertainment, policy and politics weighing in on the singular most deadly threat to American society. Americans of color suffer from disproportionately higher rates of chronic disease and this documentary examines the intersections of food, disease, race, poverty, institutional racism and government corruption.

where to watch seaspiracy

Seaspiracy, made by the team behind the award-winning 2014 film Cowspiracy, which Leonardo DiCaprio backed, pours doubt on the idea of sustainable fishing, shines a spotlight on the aquaculture industry and introduces the notion of “blood shrimp”, seafood tainted with slave labour and human rights abuses.

where to watch vegucated

Vegucated is a guerrilla-style documentary that follows three meat- and cheese-loving New Yorkers who agree to adopt a vegan diet for six weeks and learn what it’s all about. They have no idea that so much more than steak is at stake and that the planet’s fate may fall on their plates. Lured by tales of weight lost and health regained, they begin to uncover hidden sides of animal agriculture that make them wonder whether solutions offered in films like Food, Inc. go far enough.
